Focus Calibration Information:

Please note that on mirrorless cameras, we calibrate the camera to focus universally with all lenses. For DLSR camera’s our post-conversion focus calibration is set to 50mm, and will generally focus well with most lenses between 20mm – 300mm. If you are sending in a DSLR for conversion and plan on using lenses outside this range, or using one specific lens, you may want to include this lens with the camera so we can calibrate the camera to it specifically. If you have any concerns regarding lenses and your DLSR camera; please reach out to our customer service team before shipping the DSLR to us.

AR Coating

What is the AR coating and what does it do? The AR coating option adds an IR centered anti-reflective coating onto the IR filter we install when we perform an infrared conversion. It reduces hotspot artifacts that some lenses are prone to, and can reduce other stray reflections. On our full spectrum conversions we apply a broadband AR coating that covers the UV, visible, and IR ranges. The coating does not reduce optical performance in any way and is highly recommended.

Background:

Uncoated glass has a reflection of around 4-5% at all wavelengths, and we found that this reflection off the sensor filter was bouncing off the glass and reflecting back from the lens housing and aperture blades to cause IR hotspots.  We developed this anti-reflective coating that is centered around the IR wavelengths that cause hotspots, and reduced the 5% reflection down to <0.5%

Conversion AR Coating

When applied to our internal conversion filters, we find that hotspots are significantly reduced during infrared photography. Below is a sample from a Nikon 50mm 1.8 which has a strong hotspot at small apertures. Independent tests also available from Mark Hilliard here and Edd Noble here.

5 reviews for Olympus Micro Four Thirds Mirrorless Infrared Conversion Service

  1. Andrew Skiers

Just received my Olympus E-PL1. Thank you for going the extra hoop and ordering the camera for me. It would have been much more expensive if I had it done from Australia. Great service and prompt communication. Good job Kolari.

  2. Phil Reece

I sent my Olympus E-PM1 to Ilija for a 720nm conversion. The turnaround time was amazing. I couldn’t believe that I had my camera back within days. What really matters is that the camera has exceeded my expectations on not only image quality but the enjoyment I am having with a new method of shooting. This will likely not be my last IR camera conversion and I’ll definitely be back.

  3. Mike Westad

I started out with a used converted Nikon D100 that I have no idea who did the infrared conversion. Even though I loved the results I obtained from it the camera was to bulky for extended use. My decision was to sell the D100 and have my Olympus EPL-1 converted instead. I did a lot of research before choosing KolariVision to do the conversion. I contacted the “other” well known place for a quote and the general attitude I got was that they expected my business due to their reputation. KolariVision on the other hand went out of their way to earn my business without degrading the other companies quality. Turn around time was less than expected and the conversion was done perfectly. The results from my converted Olympus are amazing.

  4. Richard Isted

My first adventures into IR photography and Kolari Vision have given me a flying start. They worked with me on a tight deadline, a friend of mine brought the camera back to the UK for me. The conversion worked beautifully but most importantly for me (an IR noob) they provided a getting started leaflet and some excellent training guides on their website. Ilija has been very good a answering my noob questions that fell outside the scope of the material on the website, without making me feel stupid. It is this great after sales care that makes them highly recommended in my eyes.

    Thanks again Kolari Vision

What a great company. I really appreciate folks who will give that little bit extra. For example, I sent my camera in, no battery as instructed, and when it returned, some items, like the clock, had lost their settings. But while I was reading the owners manual (Olympus OM-D E-M1, which I love, but man those menus) I discovered that you had already set a custom WB for the IR filter. Nice! Thank you!

Some other things I have have learned that I haven’t seen anywhere else; Regular ND filters do still work, at least mine do. But the ND factor seems lower. My 6 stop seems more like 4. The 10 stop is pretty close. Also I have learned that a polarizer does work on 720nm light.

I couldn’t really get out, but here is one of my very first shots taken from my driveway.

Oh, and before I forget, I Fed-ex’ed this on Tuesday 8/15/17 and got it back on Saturday 8/26/17 via USPS. Much quicker than I had expected. I wish more companies operated this way. I would recommend them to anyone.

    Thank you.
