AR Coating

What is the AR coating and what does it do? The AR coating option adds an IR centered anti-reflective coating onto the filter we install when we convert the camera. It reduces hotspot artifacts that some lenses are prone to, and can reduce other stray reflections. The coating does not reduce optical performance in any way and is highly recommended.

Uncoated glass has a reflection of around 4-5% at all wavelengths, and we found that this reflection off the sensor filter was bouncing off the glass and reflecting back from the lens housing and aperture blades to cause IR hotspots.  We developed this anti-reflective coating that is centered around the IR wavelengths that cause hotspots, and reduced the 5% reflection down to <0.5%

Reflectance curve

Conversion AR Coating

When applied to our internal conversion filters, we find that hotspots are significantly reduced. Below is a sample from a Nikon 50mm 1.8 which has a strong hotspot at small apertures. Independent tests also available from Mark Hilliard here and Edd Noble here.

Outstanding results! I paid another company over $150 for this same IR conversion and it failed. The photo results were grainy and had almost no color to them. Don’t be fooled, this is NOT an easy conversion process.

Kolari Vision does it right. They have now converted four cameras for me, and set up, adjusted and tested each one to perfection. Kolari Vision always delivers me outstanding results, every time.

Had my Canon G9 converted by Kolari Vision and the results are outstanding. The conversion cost was less than others companies I found offering the same service and the turnaround was really fast. Will be sure to recommend Kolari Vision to all my photo friends.

I recently had my old canon G10 converted to IR at Kolari. A new life for a much beloved, much used old friend! I am extremely pleased with the results and my dealings with Kolari. Quick turnaround. Easy transactions. Friendly! Very clear instructions on how to choose conversion types, how to send in camera, what to expect, etc. Good tutorials and info for once you begin shooting. Also, one stop shopping – I had them replace my scratched lens assembly at the same time. It worked out very well for me. And I almost forgot – for considerably less than the competition charges! Thank You. Thank You. Highly recommended!

I am so glad I had my infrared conversion done by KolariVision! Even before I sent my camera in, KolariVision was a great resource for me in learning about Infrared photography. The website is so thorough, and my personal emails were answered incredibly quickly. I can’t believe how quick the turnaround time was after I sent out my camera. Most importantly, the conversion is perfect! Everything was set up and ready to go for me when the camera arrived – I just set my custom white balance, and was shooting really cool pictures immediately. The support materials sent back with my camera were helpful. I highly recommend this service!

Before I sent my camera in, I figured I could just do it myself, using the very detailed DIY on the site here. I did get the hot mirror out and put it all back together with no problem.
But then the focus issue reared its head. So I sent it in to the pros and they did a perfect job installing a 720nm and calibrated the focus.
Then I also noticed that they’d gone the extra step to replace a couple screws that had been missing in my camera for years. Great job.
It’s also worth mentioning that I had a great dialog via email with the guys and they answered all my questions about my particular niche (aerial photography of agriculture).
Turnaround time was less than a week. I’m now including a link to their site with every picture I post and spreading the word.

When I discovered infrared photography, I knew almost nothing about it and searched all over the internet before deciding to us Kolari Vision as my source for information. The web site is very informative and they quickly answered all my questions. I decided to put my trust in them to help me choose the right camera for conversion, including the type of filter, and I was not disappointed! And I got it back within just a few days. I have recommended Kolari Vision to several friends and family who have shown an interest in IR photography. When I decide to upgrade to a DSLR, I will be contacting Kolari vision for advice and conversion services. Meanwhile I’m going to enjoy using my Canon G9!

Stumbled across Kolari while trying to learn about IR photography & I’m glad I did. Ilija did a 590nm conversion on my Canon S90 & it’s excellent. After the first week of testing, I haven’t yet managed to create the promised hotspots with this cam, though Ilija assures me I’ll eventually figure out how to combine the right set of conditions! He is a pleasure to work with, the service is excellent, great communications, prompt responses & delivery. And I couldn’t tell my camera had been opened. I will be sending my next camera to Kolari Vison for conversion & I was almost reluctant to write such a good (& honest) review in case he’s too overworked to do my next job!!!

My Canon A590 IS came back from its 720nm conversion yesterday. No sign that the camera had ever been opened, not a mark. Even the custom white balance was all set – just pop in the batteries and it was ready to shoot. Results are excellent; service was brilliant. Well done Kolari Vision!

Kolari Vision have my G10 converted, excellent work, and the calibration of the WB is great, no more guess work, I highly recommend them.

I have been doing Digital Infrared for about 10 years with a Minolta DiMage 7 which was designed without a Infrared cutoff filter in front of the sensor.
Using a IR filter in front of the lens I could do I.R. with the camera on a tripod. Exposure was such that I could not hand hold the camera.
Have been looking for a company that could modify a point and shoot at a reasonable price and found it in KolariVision. Not only did they do it very well but delivered it in less than a week.

Although I haven’t receive my equipment yet and I will post another when I do so far I had the best experience between two countries. I order the Canon SX60HS full spectrum and the Evolva IR T67 torch that works with the camera for long distances. I have send approximately ten emails plus so far asking questions and these people have answered all my questions and were always polite and happy to serve. I cant wait to see what the camera can do. I paid for it and had no reservations because of the excellent reviews the company has.
