**The Canon M3 exhibits sensor artifacts due to the phase detect pixel array. This can be visible as multiple horizontal blue lines across the image.

*These cameras have an internal shutter monitor IR LED which will cause  light leaks when using very long exposures and high ISOs in the H-alpha and IR enabled conversions, in the range of 30 second exposures at 6,400 ISO.

A Note on the EOS R Series: The Canon R series mirrorless bodies do not have an internal IR LED, however many RF LENSES do! So, using most RF lenses on a converted R-series body can still cause IR light leaks, while using adapted EF lenses is mostly safe. Click here to read more about this effect.

This conversion service replaces the camera’s internal hot mirror filter with our high quality custom manufactured glass replacement infrared or clear filter. The autofocus systems are calibrated to the 50mm 1.8mm lens. This calibration results in general focus accuracy for most lenses from 18-300mm. You can also send your own lens to be calibrated to instead at no additional charge. Note, wide angle lenses need a different focus calibration.
Our checkout system is through Paypal, but you do not need an account to pay. If you have a time sensitive order, please select “Rush Delivery” as your shipping option to receive first in line service. Leave us a note with your deadline so we can work to meet it.

After you complete checkout, you will be redirected to our shipping instructions page.

Focus Calibration Information:

Please note that on mirrorless cameras, we calibrate the camera to focus universally with all lenses. For DLSR camera’s our post-conversion focus calibration is set to 50mm, and will generally focus well with most lenses between 20mm – 300mm. If you are sending in a DSLR for conversion and plan on using lenses outside this range, or using one specific lens, you may want to include this lens with the camera so we can calibrate the camera to it specifically. If you have any concerns regarding lenses and your DLSR camera; please reach out to our customer service team before shipping the DSLR to us.

AR Coating

What is the AR coating and what does it do? The AR coating option adds an IR centered anti-reflective coating onto the IR filter we install when we perform an infrared conversion. It reduces hotspot artifacts that some lenses are prone to, and can reduce other stray reflections. On our full spectrum conversions we apply a broadband AR coating that covers the UV, visible, and IR ranges. The coating does not reduce optical performance in any way and is highly recommended.

Background:

Uncoated glass has a reflection of around 4-5% at all wavelengths, and we found that this reflection off the sensor filter was bouncing off the glass and reflecting back from the lens housing and aperture blades to cause IR hotspots.  We developed this anti-reflective coating that is centered around the IR wavelengths that cause hotspots, and reduced the 5% reflection down to <0.5%

Reflectance Curve

Conversion AR Coating

When applied to our internal conversion filters, we find that hotspots are significantly reduced during infrared photography. Below is a sample from a Nikon 50mm 1.8 which has a strong hotspot at small apertures. Independent tests also available from Mark Hilliard here and Edd Noble here.

10 reviews for Canon DSLR and Mirrorless Infrared Conversion Service

  1. Jeanette Butler

I have now had my converted Canon 30D about 3 weeks. I am extremely pleased with the results. Kolarivision converted the camera faster than I expected. I am very happy with how the camera turned out. This is a camera I haven’t used for awhile, so converting it was a good idea. I have enjoyed taking IR photos in the past, but the IR filter doesn’t fit all my lenses. By converting the camera I don’t have to worry about getting a filter to fit. Also, I like the idea of being able to see what I shoot. To anyone who has been thinking about doing this to a rarely used camera I say do it. I’m having so much fun and the photos are great.

  2. Michelle Huston

Just got my Canon 40D back and it is FABULOUS!!! I’m so excited and my only regret is that I have a day of work ahead of me before I can get outside and really see what she does. Initial test shots look great.

And if anyone’s on the fence, DO THIS NOW. Kolari took great care of my baby, had it back in my hands extremely fast, and they’ve have been real pros the whole way around. You won’t go wrong if you choose them for your conversion.

  3. Mike Orso

I have always been very interested in infrared photography. When I decided to give it a try for myself, I purchased a screw-on type filter which turned out to be a total waste of money. Exposure times were very long and the results weren’t even close to what I was aiming for. After doing a ton of research, I decided I must get myself an infrared converted camera. I came across Kolari Vision who had a fantastic deal on a converted point and shoot. And WOW, was I impressed with the results from this little camera! After playing around with it for a few days, (being a professional photographer) I decided I must have a high quality DSLR. Kolari Vision had no problem letting me exchange the camera for an upgrade. The turnaround time was super fast! I couldn’t be happier with the costumer service!
It’s been just about a year since I purchased my converted DSLR. I’m happy to report that I’ve had absolutely no problems with it. People often ask me how I achieve my results with infrared photography? I tell them, don’t waste your time and money with filters. Go to Kolari Vision for the best price and service on a conversion!

  4. Karl Fortenbach

I purchased the Canon EOS M with a 720nm filter conversion from Kolari in July 2015. It is a nice compact user friendly mirrorless camera and I was able to find a lens adapter for using all of the Canon EF-S mount lenses. The Kolari website has a very informative tutorial section where they explain the use of the GIMP photo processing method. I downloaded the GIMP application and it is working rather well. The Kolari product is first class.

  5. Harold (verified owner)

Back in the days of film, I used to love what I could do with either B&W or Color IR film, though it was a challenge to use. When I heard about Kolari, I called them. Their technical person listened to me and advised me to get the 590 filter. I had a Canon 5D that was no longer worth much on trade in. It proved to be the perfect solution. I love the results. I can shoot in color, then convert to B&W if I choose with software. (I use Capture One.) I love the results.

Not knowing about Kolari Vision, I first phoned their chief competitor. The tech or owner that I spoke to was not only condescending to my questions, but overall gave the vibe that I was an imposition…actually told me to go read his website before I called again (seriously, like I’m going to call again so you can humiliate me more). I then searched for IR conversions and found Kolari Vision. This man was the complete opposite, was polite, responsive, and eager to help with any info I needed. Bottom line, he got my Canon 5D-Mark II conversion job that I am totally thrilled with. The turnaround was FAST! From the time I submitted the order to the returned converted camera in my hand was less than a week.
I am a professional artist/photographer and I used to shoot 4×5 infrared film. I always loved the dramatic effect, but digital IR is even better! With 720nm filter there is enough color retained in the file to make very interesting landscapes, with a lot more tonality compared with the old films of the day. As an artist that primarily deals to art consultants I need to constantly reinvent or add to the look of my work. This IR camera has given me one more tool to do just that…Diego Ceja

Got my camera back in under a week, white balance was already set, and photos looked great from the first shot. Focus was SHARP. Could not be happier, thank you!

  8. Steve

Just received my new converted T5i, and I am very happy with it and with Kolarivision. All of my questions were answered, and now I am off to the wonderful world of IR post processing. This IR camera is a great addition to my equipment. Thanks Kolarivision!

  9. Tomas Jirku

I’m very pleased with Kolari’s full-spectrum conversion of my Canon 6D, and their customer service has been very helpful and informative. I asked *a lot* of questions before and after the conversion, and the owner was *always* very prompt and helpful with his answers. The thorough research I did before committing to the conversion of my main camera gave me confidence that Kolari was the best company to provide the service, and the results confirmed that!

  10. Sagekind Truth

Kolari Vision is an innovative leader in expanding the infrared photography world. At the same time, they provide affordable modifications and products, that address the needs of both beginner and advanced infrared photo-enthusiasts. Best of all, they really care about their customer’s satisfaction.

I recently purchased an infrared camera that had already been modified to the 665 nm wavelength. During my initial testing the sensor appeared to be malfunctioning. I brought this to Kolari Visions attention, and they took my questions seriously.

After reviewing an image I sent them, they provided a return label to have a look at the problem. They immediately diagnosed the problem with the sensor, and advised they would repair it for no charge. I decided to inquire if they would convert the camera to full-spectrum, which I would gladly pay for. They agreed to do so, again for no charge. That, my friends, is truly outstanding customer service!

As I progress on my infrared photography path, and as a lifelong photographer, I know that I will want another (better) infrared camera. I will not hesitate to purchase again from Kolari Vision, and can wholeheartedly recommend them to you as well.
