Our Kolari Hot Mirror filter options can replace the OEM Hot Mirror of a Blackmagic camera providing corrosion resistance amongst various other improvements. These filters consist of the professional-level optics we’re known for.

In this service we professionally install the filter type of your choosing into your camera. We can take camera models that aren’t listed here and can custom fit our glass into it, in this case please select “All Other Blackmagic Models” at the bottom of the camera model dropdown menu.

Filter Option Guide:

  • Replacement for Original Hot Mirror
    • We optimized this filter to provide the closest color match to the original Blackmagic UV/IR cutting hot mirror, while also addressing the issues surrounding coating degradation, scratch resistance and corrosion over time.
    • This filter is the option to choose if you have existing LUTs for your Blackmagic as it will retain the same color profile across the board while offering the added protection that our advanced surface coatings provide.
    • This filter is for visible light-only videography and photography
  • Upgraded IR Blocking Hot Mirror
    • With this filter we are bringing our highly successful Hot Mirror Pro 2 glass to the Blackmagic ecosystem.
    • This is our latest generation of UV and IR blocking glass specifically designed to provide the cleanest visible light image possible. This filter glass provides a more aggressive UV cut, and removes the residual IR bleed at the top end which were both issues found on the original Blackmagic filter. This filter will remove the pink hues from clothing and foliage and produce a clean visible light image akin to that found on high end dedicated photography cameras from Canon, Sony, Fuji and Nikon.
    • This filter may not be compatible with existing LUTs made for the IR blocking glass found in stock Blackmagic cameras, and may require making new LUTs.
    • This filter is for visible light-only videography and photography
  • Full Spectrum Clear Glass
    • This is our multispectral infrared Full Spectrum clear glass for the Blackmagic cameras. This glass will pass all wavelengths that the sensor is capable of detecting.
    • Where possible (for supported models) we apply our anti-reflective and anti-smudge hard coatings to our premium glass to increase light transmission while reducing flares and ghosting. These multi-coatings make cleaning and upkeep an effortless task due to their hydrophobic, dust-resistant, and scratch-resistant qualities.
    • This filter is designed for infrared and full spectrum videography and photography.

AR Coating

What is the AR coating and what does it do? The AR coating option adds an IR centered anti-reflective coating onto the IR filter we install when we perform an infrared conversion. It reduces hotspot artifacts that some lenses are prone to, and can reduce other stray reflections. On our full spectrum conversions we apply a broadband AR coating that covers the UV, visible, and IR ranges. The coating does not reduce optical performance in any way and is highly recommended.

Uncoated glass has a reflection of around 4-5% at all wavelengths, and we found that this reflection off the sensor filter was bouncing off the glass and reflecting back from the lens housing and aperture blades to cause IR hotspots.  We developed this anti-reflective coating that is centered around the IR wavelengths that cause hotspots, and reduced the 5% reflection down to <0.5%

Conversion AR Coating

When applied to our internal conversion filters, we find that hotspots are significantly reduced during infrared photography. Below is a sample from a Nikon 50mm 1.8 which has a strong hotspot at small apertures. Independent tests also available from Mark Hilliard here and Edd Noble here.
