Description

Used good condition camera.

The SZ7 is a great little camera and offers true custom white balance. With powerful white balance, vivid color infrared pictures are able to be captured with ease. The camera comes with a great set of creative features, like 3D shooting, miniature effect, in camera HDR, and shooting stills at up to 10FPS at full resolution.

With a large 3 inch Live view LCD composing images directly in IR is very easy! The lens on this camera is also very good, especially for infrared! The lens is a very wide 25mm focal distance for great wide angle shots and comes with optical image stabilization to assist in handheld shots. The lens is also very crisp in IR with good sharpness at the edges. With a 10x zoom the lens gives you a powerful zoom making composition easy.

This is the best performing IR camera we have ever been able to offer in this price range! Read a review of it below.

Great for video as well, the camera supports full high definition video at 1920 x 1080 60i and stereo microphones.

Perfect for a first time IR camera or small IR camera to bring along with your regular gear.

This is the upgrade from our previous bestsellers, the FH20 and FH27.

SZ7 Camera Review by Anke Tillman.

“I really like about her that she is small; you can have it always with you, even when you are up to a non IR shoot. I would not carry my D70s (modified) with me, just “in case”. With the Lumix in a small compartment of the backpack you are prepared everywhere, if some great foliage pops up.

Regarding picture quality, I think the Lumix pictures are the same quality as the D70s, I don’t see much difference in the jpeg eventually. With the Nikon I shoot in raw, but like I said, in the end you don’t see much difference. The other components of the Lumix are better for IR, especially the huge display where you see your picture right away. By looking at it you can tell already if the WB is right. No way doing that with the tiny Nikon display. Shooting the Lumix is more convenient, this is increasing creativity.

There is a little more noise. But with Dfine(noise reduction software) it does not bother me.”

AR Coating

What is the AR coating and what does it do? The AR coating option adds an IR centered anti-reflective coating onto the IR filter we install when we perform an infrared conversion. It reduces hotspot artifacts that some lenses are prone to, and can reduce other stray reflections. On our full spectrum conversions we apply a broadband AR coating that covers the UV, visible, and IR ranges. The coating does not reduce optical performance in any way and is highly recommended.

Background:

Uncoated glass has a reflection of around 4-5% at all wavelengths, and we found that this reflection off the sensor filter was bouncing off the glass and reflecting back from the lens housing and aperture blades to cause IR hotspots.  We developed this anti-reflective coating that is centered around the IR wavelengths that cause hotspots, and reduced the 5% reflection down to <0.5%

Reflectance Curve

Conversion AR Coating

When applied to our internal conversion filters, we find that hotspots are significantly reduced during infrared photography. Below is a sample from a Nikon 50mm 1.8 which has a strong hotspot at small apertures. Independent tests also available from Mark Hilliard here and Edd Noble here.

2 reviews for Panasonic Lumix DMC-SZ7 14.1 MP Infrared Converted Camera

  1. Brian Sutherland

I recently bought a converted Canon SZ7 and am quite happy with the photos I’ve obtained with the camera. In the old film days I often wished to do IR photography but never did owing to the complexity among other things.

I have a couple of old digital cameras- an Olympus C2000Z and a Minolta Dimage 7 which I’ve used. This little converted Canon, however, is much more convenient in that I don’t need any extra filters and it’s small enough to fit in my shirt pocket.

Its focal length range is astonishing for such a small camera.

I am primarily interested in black and white IR photos of landscapes, especially skies. The images are easily converted in Paint Shop Pro X.

This camera is ideal in that I need never leave the house without it.

With its very small sensor, the photos are somewhat soft but respond well to sharpening in post-processing.

Overall, I am very happy with this camera- it is exactly what I was looking for.

Ordered Lumix SZ7 720nm converted camera on 2nd Oct , received on 6th Oct, now that’s great service.

Camera was well packed & secure in the box, contents where as advertised. It looked brand new, no scrapes, scratches or any marks that I could see. Still getting used to it, but it seems to work fine.

The IR action that is listed on your web page for Photoshop also works with Elements 12 (may wont to update that page).

I’m happy with my purchase & will use your company again in the future for a DSLR conversion. Also would have no problems recommending your company to friends or anyone that is thinking of buying or converting a camera to IR.
