Infrared Camera Reviews (Point and Shoots)

Before you buy, its good to know how a camera performs. With infrared cameras, thats a problem. At best, there are manufacturer specifications and a few sample pictures available. These reviews are based on performance of converted cameras, not cameras with an external filter, all sample pictures below are from the reviewed camera. We’ve reviewed point and shoots first because their performance is less flexible from the fixed lens, and there is more variation in sensor response

Please note, these reviews are for how the camera works in infrared, not on general camera features. These rankings are only in regards to how it handles IR versus normal functioning and ignores overall features. While a compact camera and DSLR might both receive the same overall ranking here, keep in mind that we ignore many key features that will otherwise distinguish the camera’s general performance.

Hotspot Rating refers to how prone the camera is to hotspots.

Color Performance refers to how well the camera (720nm) performs for false color purposes. 590 and 665 filters may vary.

Features refers only to features related to infrared, such as RAW, aperture priority, manaul focus, custom white balance, etc, and ignores common features like megapixels, zoom, power on time, etc.

Black and white is not reviewed much because performance in black and white tends to be consistent with the cameras normal picture quality.

We are working hard to review more cameras, but we can only write about so many. For practical purposes, a lot of cameras close in model number perform very simularly for infrared purposes, and often times manufacturers reuse the exact same sensor and lens. Our review of one model will usually follow through for other models in the series as well, but sometimes lenses can unexpectedly form hotspots so be cautious.
