Infrared Visibility

Visibility with Infrared Light

One of the charecteristics of infrared light is that it provides much greater visibility than visible light, both in foggy weather and normal weather. On a clear day, shooting with infrared provides visibility over a greater distance. Below, a visible light picture and an infrared picture taken with a 665nm filter. Both were taken with the same camera and lens on a sunny day, just using a different filter.

In foggy or haze weather, the difference can be even more severe. While visibility with visible light can be severely impaired, infrared does not suffer nearly as much. This is one of the reasons infrared is popular for aerial photography.
