Full Frame: D3†, D3x†, D3s†, D4†, D4s, D5, D700†, D750*†, D780, D600, D610, D800, D800e, D810, Df, D500*, D850, Z5**†, Z6**†, Z7**†,Z6II**†, Z7II**†, Z9, Z8

NOTE: Dust reduction systems are disabled after conversion.

* The D40, D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100, D5200, D7100, and D500 will not be able to set a white balance after conversion in most cases. Some other models can also have trouble setting a white balance and may need to be set in RAW.

** V1, V2, J1, J2, S1, Z5, Z6, Z6II, and Z7, Z7II will set a white balance on the 720 and 850nm filters only. They are calibrated to focus with all lenses.

† The D700, D750, D3, D3S, D3X, D4, Z5, Z6, Z7, Z6II, and Z7II contain an IR internal shutter monitor that can cause light leaks when using very long exposures and high ISOs in the H-alpha and IR enabled conversions, in the range of 30 second exposures at 6,400 ISO. The D7000, D7100, D600 and D800 also have this monitor but do not have this contamination issue. This issue can be avoided on the Z5, Z6, and Z7 when using silent shutter mode.

This conversion service replaces the camera’s internal hot mirror filter with our high quality custom manufactured glass replacement infrared or clear filter. The autofocus systems are calibrated to the 50mm 1.8mm lens. This calibration results in general focus accuracy for most lenses from 18-300mm. You can also send your own lens to be calibrated to instead at no additional charge. Note, ultra wide angle lenses need special calibration. If calibrating to an ultra wide angle lens the autofocus will not work with tele lenses.

Focus Calibration Information:

Please note that on mirrorless cameras, we calibrate the camera to focus universally with all lenses. For DLSR camera’s our post-conversion focus calibration is set to 50mm, and will generally focus well with most lenses between 20mm – 300mm. If you are sending in a DSLR for conversion and plan on using lenses outside this range, or using one specific lens, you may want to include this lens with the camera so we can calibrate the camera to it specifically. If you have any concerns regarding lenses and your DLSR camera; please reach out to our customer service team before shipping the DSLR tous.

AR Coating

What is the AR coating and what does it do? The AR coating option adds an IR centered anti-reflective coating onto the IR filter we install when we perform an infrared conversion. It reduces hotspot artifacts that some lenses are prone to, and can reduce other stray reflections. On our full spectrum conversions we apply a broadband AR coating that covers the UV, visible, and IR ranges. The coating does not reduce optical performance in any way and is highly recommended.

Background:

Uncoated glass has a reflection of around 4-5% at all wavelengths, and we found that this reflection off the sensor filter was bouncing off the glass and reflecting back from the lens housing and aperture blades to cause IR hotspots.  We developed this anti-reflective coating that is centered around the IR wavelengths that cause hotspots, and reduced the 5% reflection down to <0.5%

Reflectance Curve

Conversion AR Coating

When applied to our internal conversion filters, we find that hotspots are significantly reduced during infrared photography. Below is a sample from a Nikon 50mm 1.8 which has a strong hotspot at small apertures. Independent tests also available from Mark Hilliard here and Edd Noble here.

13 reviews for Nikon DSLR and Mirrorless Infrared Conversion Service

  1. Don Dudenbostel

Since the mid 60’s I have worked with IR as an art form and a part of my business even before Kodak made high speed IR. Exposure and process have always been critical to achieve excellent results and even then were unpredictable. IR film is still available but the character has been lost and it’s extremely slow and again hard to use. I decided to give Kolari Vision a try and see how their IR filter worked for B&W. My camera arrived today after just one week and I am knocked out with the results. It’s overcast in my area today with rain which would have made it impossible to photograph on film. Being very excited I decided to shoot a few tests and could not believe the superb results. The results were way beyond my expectations and beyond what I would expect on a good day with film. I wish Kolari had been around years ago.
Job well done! Inexpensive, fast and superb results!!!

I just wanted to thank you for the excellent and speedy work on my D7000 conversion. I was really concerned about whether or not I could get a good white balance, and particularly whether or not I would be able to focus sharply without using LiveView, but I not only do I not have problems with either, I do believe that the focusing post-conversion is even sharper than it was beforehand. Having never shot IR before I was not only satisfied, but immediately impressed with the results. I couldn’t be more pleased. Thank you so much for the excellent work. Now you have me wondering if I should be doing an alternate conversion on my D90 instead of selling it.

  3. M. Lubiarz

After days of researching reviews, comments and various websites that do IR conversions, I decided to go with KolariVision. Sent off my Nikon D200 for an 850Nm conversion. Turn around time was 10 days door to door. My camera came back perfect! Looked as if it was never touched. Started shooting with it right out of the box…. after a quick custom white balance. Images are SHARP! and the sensor is CLEAN!. Even with several other lenses the auto focus is dead on! If you are thinking of getting into digital IR photography I would HIGHLY RECOMEND Kolari Vision for quality, customer service, price and turn around time. I will be using them for future conversions.

  4. Elisabeth

Having a full-spectrum converted (from UV to near IR) DSLR was a long time dream for me. I never thought I would own such a camera!
Kolarivision made it possible at a very decent price!

I used to remove the hot mirror myself on some of my point and shoots but of course I would get focus problems afterwards.

I now have a Nikon DSLR that is totally dedicated to my infrared, UV and full-spectrum works and experiments and takes razor-sharp images just like my unconverted D3100 does!
Many many thanks to the Kolari Team for the amazing job and service they provide!

  5. Waldemar

If you think about converting your camera to IR don’t look for anybody else but Kolari Vision who will do it for you in the most professional and speedy way. I have received my converted D7100 back and am very happy with it.
Kolari Vision provides an excellent service and they answer ALL emails in friendly manner and therefore I recommend them to anybody who wants to convert their camera into IR. Five STARS!

  6. K V

Outstanding company. I love to work with the Nikon that Kolari Vision converted to infrared. I deeply appreciate all the instruction on doing infrared photography taught by Ilija.

  7. Steve

Kolari Visions conversion service is a high quality professional service. With me having over 40 years in photography of one kind or another, I would usually never let anyone touch a camera unless it was a factory authorized shop. To show my skepticism, I went over the camera with a 10x eye loop. I looked for screws with messed up heads, and or gaps and poor fitting shells. NONE of this showed up. And since the fingers are more sensitive than the eyes, I closed my eyes and carefully felt the camera all over! Wow! Great Job! Kolari Visions. The test will come over the next few months, but the first few shots I made were analyzed from edge to edge, and blown up to see pixel behavior at the edges and around the center. Quality was there and I now place Kolari Visions card In with the manufactures. They are a place I will return to and know I am getting first class work done. The service and advice is great, so if you want a great job done Kolari Visions I will recommend. If you are not quite sure what to get.

Then E-Mail the staff and they will give you an honest idea for the product to fit you. If you are on a budget, push it now because once you are hooked on the fun, you will be glad you did.

  8. Ralph A. Croning

I have been photographing in digital IR for over a decade now. I recently sent in my Nikon D200 for conversion to 850nm. The turnaround time was fast, the conversion fantastic. KolariVision is one of the top two conversion services out there and their prices are the best. Can’t wait to send my next camera in.

  9. Michelle Brixius-Kasich (verified owner)

Kolari did my D7100. My review of my camera is as follows: The D7100 works very well in infrared. There is only one issue which is not the fault of Kolari. The D7100 will not white balance after the conversion. I looked everywhere online to track down the problem and all I could find was comments about how you have to white balance in the manufacturer’s Software and shoot in Raw, so keep that in mind. Also, if you use the camera in aperture priority make sure you add about 1 stop of exposure. Once you white balance in the Nikon software you will find your images will be come a bit darker and you will need that extra stop of light to get a stronger image.

i love my Kolari conversion, in fact i married her!
ok just kidding but really this company went beyond it means. working on the weekend and easter sunday to deliver my 720nm conversion so i could take it on vacation with me.. The sensor was spotless and clean and focus to perfection. I have had instant response and aid from them in regards to post processing issues that i have encountered with certain lenses. I will consider them for all my conversions… did i mention they are also more affordable?

  11. gary podolny (verified owner)

My conversion arrived today. Everything went well. You are probably the most efficient company that I have ever dealt with. It was a pleasure having you do the conversion. Would highly recommend you.

  12. Sally Smith

I am brand new to infrared, but I have always admired it. Back in the film days I think I shot one roll of infrared film and it didn’t turn out very well. I decided to buy an entry level Nikon (D3400) and go for it. I was torn between several places for conversion, but I decided to go with Kolari. I’m very glad I did. I have been playing with my camera for a week trying different lenses and different times of days and weather conditions. My photos are beautiful! I was worried about focus and exposure and if my photos would look good because of my inexperience with infrared, but my conversion is so great that everything is just terrific. I got the coating to help with lens flare and I haven’t had any problems, but to be honest since this is my first infrared, I have no comparison– I just know I haven’t had any problems. The turn around time was very fast! I sent my camera off and got it back within the same week. I couldn’t be happier with my camera or my experience with Kolari. Thank you!

I had been considering converting my Nikon D70s to infrared for almost a year. After researching the different conversion services and their reviews, I settled on Kolari Vision. Their site was informative and the process of ordering was simple and very straightforward. Being new to the process of conversion, I mistakenly ordered a filter that was incompatible with my conversion selection. They notified me and immediately processed the credit. Following the conversion, I had a couple of questions which were answered, via email, in a very timely manner.

While I am just a beginner, I expect to get more deeply involved in infrared photography. Kolari Vision will be my “goto” source for all of my needs in this area. Highly recommended …
